With her dark magic, she cast a curse that separated the lovers and banished them to different parts of the world.

Desperate to be reunited, Tonatiuh and Citlali pleaded with the gods for a solution. The god Quetzalcóatl, in his wisdom, granted them a special plant that symbolized their eternal love: the nopal (prickly pear cactus). This resilient and vibrant cactus would become a link between them and their culture, reminding them of their love through the ages.
